Bonds of Affection

With her bold and candid personality, Madam Yi always reminds people of heroes from movies. In fact, to many stray animals, she is a hero in real life¡XMadam Yi always lends a hand to animals that are bullied, hungry or injured.

Madam Yi thinks that any lives, including cats and dogs, or even plants have as much right to survive as human being, yet mankind is too selfish to concern only about their self-interest. She believes that mankind is exploiting animals in a way that has crossed the bottom line, leaving animals with nowhere to go. For instance, in her opinion, the slaughter of poultry to prevent the spread of the H5N1 bird flu in Hong Kong is too drastic. She believes that every single life possesses a distinctive value, and deserves respects.

It All Began with An Encounter

Madam Yi began her work in helping stray animals when she and her friend encountered 3 puppies and their mother during hiking in 1999. They promised to the cold and hungry puppies that they will be back. The next day, they kept the promise and visited the puppies with food. Not only didn¡¦t the dog mother resist their approach, but she showed appreciation for their help. The incident raised Madam Yi and her friend awareness for stray animals.

Later on, they met 3 other mongrel puppies. It was a cold day with only 7¢XC, they could not bear to leave the puppies alone, so they adopted 2 of them. This marked the start of Madam Yi¡¦s journey in rescuing stray animals. After taking care of dogs for all these years, Madam Yi still finds mongrels the most loyal and intelligent dogs.

Living with such a number of dogs, it is almost inevitable to get hurt when trying to stop their fights ; yet instead of going to the doctor, she usually handles the injury in her own way¡Xapplying crushed Rohdea japonica leaves with brown sugar to the wound, and let the wound heal on its own.

Be There When Needed

Madam Yi thinks that it¡¦s human nature to help when needed. Therefore, whenever she meets animals in need, especially stray animals living in her neighborhood, she would lend a hand to them. For instance, there was a dog mother that always wandered around with her puppies looking for food, but they got seriously injured during a car accident one day. Although Madam Yi realized that she couldn¡¦t save them, she tried to comfort them with food before they passed away.

She also visits Fei Ngo Shan every week to feed stray dogs there, as she knows that dogs living there are in extremely poor condition¡Xnot only do they need to search for food from trashes, she even witnessed that a dog starving so much that it had to chew sanitary napkins.

Every Effort Is Worth It

Madam Yi was once a police officer, but she rather spends more time with her dogs after her 40s. She is now living with dozens of mongrels, and each of them has their own story. After leaving the police force, she began to look at things from a different angle. Although she has seen some people abusing dogs, while some even attempted to act against her, e.g. puncturing her bicycle tyre, she took the offences easily.

It¡¦s been a decade since she started rescuing animals, her sense of mission in saving animals is a strong motivation for her. She described the happiness that it brings to her feels like¡§energized by Ginseng¡¨, and every effort is worth it.
